LIMA, Peru, June 14, 2015 – Canada outclassed Uruguay to improve
their win-loss record to 2-0 in Pool B of the Women’s Volleyball
Pan American Cup by winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-13) in day two
at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Sunday.
The taller Canadians dominated in the blocking category 10-0 and
outserved their opponents 6-2. The winners also held an
overwhelming advantage of 35-15 in attacks.
Canadian Jennifer Cross was the only player in the match who
reached double digits in the scores with 10 points, four blocks
included. Marie-Pier Murray added 8 points in the victory while
Shainah Joseph and Brittney Page contributed 7 points apiece.
Uruguay’s Gabriela Talmon had 5 points in the losing cause.
After the 3-2 victory over Brazil, the Canadian team knew that
with the fatigue, the concentration was going to be crucial for
the victory, admitted Brittney Page, the captain of Canada. “We
had to be focused because we were coming from a long match in
day one. The good thing is that all the players receive chance
to play and handled the situation.”
Canada’s Coach Arnd Ludwig: “We had played a long match
yesterday and knew that the focus was going to be important to
keep a good rhythm until the end and finish the match in three
sets.”
“I am not happy with the way my team played, they lacked
enthusiasm and desire to battle until the end like Uruguay
usually does. To play against Canada we had to put a lot of
pressure in the serves and the playing system we planned, we
started to used it only in the last set,” Uruguayan coach
Yamandu Peralta said.
Sabrina Olave, the Uruguayan captain, admitted to be
disappointed with the result and also for not following the plan
designed for Canada.
“It was a tough match and we leave unsatisfied. The idea was to
be evolving and we missed too many things. This is a very young
team, reinforced with two senior players and the important thing
is that they can be acquiring experience.”
