Canada leaves with victory over Mexico
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 12, 2020 – Canada
defeated Mexico 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23) in the
match for third place at the NORCECA Women’s Volleyball
Qualification Tournament Tokyo 2020 on Sunday at the Sports
Palace in Santo Domingo.
In a match between winless teams, the Canadians recovered
from dropping the first set and went on to dominate the next
two. The contest concluded when Ivone Martinez crashed her
serve into the net.
Alexa Gray and Kiera Van Ryk stood out as the best Canadian
scorers with 26 and 23 points, respectively. Mexico’s
Samantha Bricio had 22 followed by Andrea Rangel with 18
points.
Tom Black, coach of Canada: “Disappointed with the
performance of the team in this competition. A tough match
against Dominican Republic and another with Puerto Rico. Our
team also has young players that sometimes let the game slip
through their hands at the moment of closing important
plays.”
Gabriela Alarcón, coach of Mexico: “Satisfied with the job
done. Our objective was to put together our “A” team and we
did it. We have many young players who don’t know how to
finish the important points. We lack the experience so we
need to focus in future international events with the goal
of prepare the team for the next Olympic cycle.”
