IQUITOS, Peru, June 12, 2013 – Canada qualified to the
quarterfinals of the XII Pan American Women’s Cup by defeating
Costa Rica in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-19).
With fewer errors than the opponent (16 to 23), and a difference
of 36-30 in attacks, the Canadians claimed the victory to finish
in second place of Pool B with 10 points from two victories and
a loss in this phase.
Kyla Richey with 18 points and Margaret Barclay with 15 were the
top scores of the contest, followed by Costa Ricans Verania
Willis and Karen Cope with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The coaches of both teams expressed their satisfaction with the
performance of their players.
“I am very happy with this result since it is the first occasion
in many years that we are able to advance to the quarterfinals
of the Cup. I feel glad about the progress of the team and I
hope we can maintain the same rhythm in the next phase,”
commented Arnd Ludwig, Coach of Canada.
His colleague Horacio Bastit remarked: “This time, even though
the result was not good, I fell OK with the performance of the
girls. We are correcting mistakes and I think we are the best
fourth place, so step by step we will reach the objective of
being protagonists.” |
