LIMA, Peru, June 13, 2015 – Canada edged Brazil in a five-set
thriller (15-25, 25-14, 15-25, 28-26, 15-9) in the last match of
Pool B in day one at the XIV Women’s Pan American Cup taking
place at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima.
The North Americans held the advantage in attacks 56-38 and
topped Brazil in the blocking department 15-11. The South
American side was better in aces 8-4.
Lucille Chanuk (16), Jamie Thibault (15), Brittney Page (14) and
Tabitha Love (12) topped Canada’s scoring charts. Karoline
Tomena led Brazil with 13 points, followed by Gabriela Rocha and
Lorenne Geraldo with 11 points apiece.
Page, the captain of Canada said to be proud of her team for
starting with a victory against the Brazilian team which is
known for its level and history. “We were hungry for the victory
and we knew we had to play aggressively and in the fifth set we
closed the match with a great team effort.”
Arnd Ludwig, the coach of Canada said “the key was the comeback
in the fourth set when we improved our reception which helped to
go to the fifth set with more confidence and working together we
were able to step up our game and improve from the first and
third set.”
“The experience was a key factor,” said Lana Conceicao, the
Brazilian captain while commenting the match. “It was a very
close game going to five sets but in the last two the experience
of an adult team was important and we took our game level down.”
Mauricio Thomas, the coach of Brazil commented about the height
of Canada team. “The attack of Canada was very difficult for us
and the lack of experience caused us to make many mistakes, but
the good thing is that the girls are learning and battle until
the end.” |
