Canada prevail against tough Mexico in Pool S
MISSISSAUGA, Canada, May 17, 2014 -
Action heated up tonight in
Pool S of the NORCECA Women’s World Championship Qualification.
In an exciting game, Mexico warmed up and gave Canada a
challenge to win the third set, but Canada regrouped to take the
match in four sets (25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16).
It was a big game for Manitoban Tabi Love with 22 points,
followed by Captain Brittney Page with 15.
Mexico’s Andrea Rangel topped her team’s efforts contributing 13
points tonight.
“We started in the second set to let it get go a bit, and we
made too many errors. Maybe we thought it was too easy. I’m
glad we came back in the fourth set. I am looking forward to
the finals. I think it might have been good to lose a set as we
must learn that we have to be focused all the time. Mexico is a
tough team – they always fight and always play hard. That’s what
we learned today.” - Canada’s Head Coach Arnd (Lupo) Ludwig
“We came in really focused and ready to go, and it proved it in
the score and in every point. But then we just had a lapse and
it was own fault. We just really let it get away – it was ours
to take and we let them take points. We knew we had it in us to
do this and be the top team, so we wanted to re-focus and it
worked out for us in the end.” - Brittney Page, Captain of
Canada
“I’m happy with my team’s performance. It was a very exciting
game, but tomorrow will be the most important game now because
if we win tomorrow we will advance to the finals on Monday.”
– Jorge Miguel Azair, Mexico’s Coach
“We played a good game, but Canada also played very well. We are
focusing on our game tomorrow against Jamaica. If we can get
that second win it means we will face Canada in the finals on
Monday and that is our ultimate goal.” – Selena Barajas,
Captain of Mexico |
