Canada to play for fifth place at Pan Am Cup

CALLAO, Peru, June 20, 2015 - Canada advanced to the match for fifth place of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by defeating Colombia 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-19, 25-9) at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao on Saturday.

The taller Canadians outblocked the Colombians 15-7 and held a 6-1 margin in aces. They also had the advantage in attacks 47-37 and made fewer errors 24 to 28 by the opponents.

Kyla Richey was the best scorer for the winning team with 15 points, followed by Tabhita Love with 13, three blocks included. Lucille Charuk had four blocks among her 12 points and Jaimie Thibault chipped in with 11, two blocks and two aces included. Amanda Coneo had 14 points for Colombia and Ivonne Montano added 10 in the loss.

Brittney Page, captain of Canada: “It was an important victory for us as we continue moving forward. We have worked very well with the blocking and I hope we can keep that consistency. We have played against Brazil and have seen Puerto Rico so we are ready to go out to win fifth place.”

Maria Marin, captain of Colombia: “We had problems to get our rhythm and made many errors with the serves and reception. Maybe it was lack of concentration. Tomorrow we will battle to finish in the seventh place.”

Arnd Ludwig, coach of Canada: “It was important to win because in the last two matches we couldn’t develop our performance. We are going to watch closely the match of Puerto Rico and Brazil and then prepare a plan that allows us to close the tournament with a victory.”

Eduardo Guillaume, coach of Colombia: “Today my girls seemed to feel comfortable with yesterday’s victory and they didn’t go out with a winning attitude. We started to organize in the second set but we came up short.”
