Canada upset China in Nations League

RIMINI, Italy, June 1, 2021 – One day after losing a five-set match against Turkey to kick off the second round, the women’s volleyball team of Canada recovered to claim a roller-coaster 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 15-25, 15-12)  victory over the powerful China in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League on Tuesday.

Canada had lost its four previous matches to Brazil, United States and Dominican Republic in the first round and to Turkey in the second phase..

It was the first victory ever for Canada in FIVB official competitions, having lost the two previous matches between the two countries.

Kiera Van Ryk recorded 25 points as the leading scorer of the Canadian squad. Three other players also reached double digits in scoring with Andrea Mitrovic (17), Hillary Howe (14) and Jennifer Cross (13) joining Van Ryk.

Zhang Changning topped the Chinese scoring sheets with 22 points, followed by Fang Duan with 10 and Yao Li and Yuanyuan Wang with 9 points apiece.
