Canadians and Cubans advance to women’s semis in Punta Cana Qualifier

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, April 16, 2022 – Canadian twins Megan and Nicole McNamara and Cubans Leila Martinez and Lidy Echeverría advanced to the women’s semifinals of the Punta Cana Qualification Tournament to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

The McNamara sisters began their campaign in Pool A with a 2-0 (21-10, 21-18) win over the Dominican Republic’s Julibeth Payano and Jeneiry del Rosario in 30 minutes and came back to defeat La Teisha Joseph and Apphia Glasgow of Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 (21-10, 21-8) in 32 minutes.

Payano/Rosario then recovered to pull a 2-0 (21-9, 21-10) win over Joseph/Glasgow in 29 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Cuban duo of Martínez/Echeverría beat Angjeny Tolentino and Shuderlys Meulens of Netherlands Antilles 2-0 (21-9, 21-12) to kick off their day in Pool B.

Then Taylor Nutterfield and Melanie Valenciana of U.S. Virgin Islands outplayed Tolentino/Meulens 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) to set a decisive match for Pool B supremacy against the Cuban duo who subdued Nutterfield/Valenciana 2-0 (21-8, 21-9) to claim first place.

In Sunday’s quarterfinals, Payano/Rosario will meet Tolentino/Meulens while Nutterfield/Valenciana will go against Joseph/Glasgow.
