Caribes and Gigantes Win Quickly on Opening Night of the LVSM
San Sebastián, Puerto Rico – October 24, 2025 – Unlike the opening
night of the Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM) season, when
matches extended to decisive fifth sets, Friday’s games — the second
day of this young season — were decided in straight sets.
At the Luis Aymat Cardona Coliseum in San Sebastián, the two-time
defending champions, Caribes, had little trouble defeating the
Plataneros de Corozal by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
Throughout the night, San Sebastián pressured with strong serves,
earning positive results. In the first set, the home team dominated
comfortably.
In the second set, the Caribes maintained their rhythm from the
service line, holding a steady 4- to 5-point advantage. A block
against Spencer Olivier made it 22-17, securing the set. Then, an
attack from Pelegrín Vargas off the opponent’s block put the score
at 24-20, and a service error by Elian Rivera closed it at 25-22.
The third set was a copy-paste of the previous one, as San
Sebastián continued to apply service pressure, causing problems for
the Plataneros’ reception.
An attack error by Olivier and a block against Rivera extended the
lead to 22-13. An attack from Ezequiel Cruz from position two made
it 24-14, and another block against Rivera sealed the 25-15 set and
the match.
The Caribes dominated in all aspects of the game: 36-35 in attacks,
12-3 in blocks, 7-2 in aces, 32-30 in digs, and 29-25 in passes.
Both teams finished with eight assists each.
Pelegrín Vargas led the Caribes with 18 points, followed by Corey
Chavers with 12 and Mark Frazier with 10. For the Plataneros,
Spencer Olivier contributed 13 points, all on attacks.
San Sebastián earned the full three points from the match, securing
their first win of the season. Corozal drops to 0-1 with no points.
IN THREE: GIGANTES DE CAROLINA OVER METS
At the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum in Carolina, the Gigantes defeated
last season’s runners-up, the Mets de Guaynabo, in straight sets
(25-23, 25-22, 25-22), claiming the full three points from the
match.
Cuban standout Félix Chapman led Carolina’s double-digit offense
with 26 points (22 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 ace), followed by Luis Vega
with 10.
For Guaynabo, Inovel Romero scored 13 points, all on attacks, and
Gregory Torres added 12.
Carolina held the edge in attacks (44-39), blocks (6-1), passes
(35-34), and assists (26-16). The Mets led in aces (3-1) and digs
(36-35).
With the victory, Carolina improves to 1-0 with 3 points, while the
Mets de Guaynabo begin the season 0-1 with no points. |
