Caribes de San Sebastián, Current LVSM Champions, Secure Semifinal Spot
SAN SEBASTIÁN, Puerto Rico, October 29, 2024. – In an impressive display
of power and strategy on the Luis Aymat Cardona court, the Caribes swept
the Gigantes de Carolina 3-0 in the quarterfinal series.
The scores in this third game were 25-14, 25-23, and 25-22, once again
showcasing the team's dominance.
Opposite hitter Jalen Penrose was the undisputed star of the night,
scoring an astonishing 24 points and being the only player to reach
double digits.
For the Gigantes de Carolina, Jeff Menzel fought hard, contributing 20
points, but it wasn’t enough to stop the unstoppable advance of the
Caribes.
In the third set, the Caribes sealed it at 24-21 thanks to a service
error by Jeff Menzel and Penrose’s flawless offensive play from Zone
Two. Although Carolina tried to rally, Jalen Penrose came back and, with
a decisive attack in the same zone, secured the victory with a final
score of 25-22.
San Sebastián outperformed Carolina in blocks (8-4) and assists (19-9),
while Carolina led in attacks (38-33), aces (4-3), and digs (44-27).
This series marks the third quarterfinal sweep where a team didn’t allow
any leeway to its opponent.
The Guaynabo Mets also dominated the Mayagüez Indios 3-0, while the
Naranjito Changos did the same against the Adjuntas Gigantes.
Now, the defending tournament champions Caribes de San Sebastián are
preparing for an exciting semifinal showdown against last year’s
runner-up, the Changos de Naranjito.
Semifinal and Final Series Format
In the Semifinal Series, the winner of Quarterfinal Series A (Guaynabo
Mets - Winner) will face the winner of Series D (Yauco Cafeteros vs.
Corozal Plataneros). The winner of Quarterfinal Series B (Naranjito
Changos - Winner) will face the winner of Series C (San Sebastián
Caribes - Winner).
The Semifinals will be played as best-of-seven games, where the first
team to win four advances.
The Final Series will begin on the home court of the finalist with the
higher position in the Regular Season, regardless of whether they belong
to the Island or Metro Section.
Both series will follow a wins-losses system rather than the prevailing
points system.
