PUERTO CORTES, Honduras, June 12, 2015 – Defending Central
American women’s champions Natalia Alfaro/Karen Cope of Costa
Rica-1 had to battle in their second match of Pool B before
prevailing against Lolette Rodriguez/Elia Machado with a 2-1
victory on day one of the XV Central American Beach Volleyball
Tournament.
Rodriguez/Machado enjoyed a good start taking the first set
21-18 while the Costa Ricans recovered to get the deadlock at
1-1 by winning the second 21-19. In the third and decisive set,
Lolette and Elia were close to the victory leading 14-13 but a
sensational reaction by Cope allowed the Costa Ricans to tie at
14-all before the experienced Alfaro closed the match 16-14.
Alfaro/Cope had won their first match 2-0 (21-12, 21-14) over
Maria Fernanda Vargas/Kathya Vasquez of El Salvador-2. The pool
is completed by Ada Villalobos/Blanca Recinos of Guatemala-2 who
lost their two matches against Nicaragua-1 and El Salvador-2.
Costa Rica-1 will be looking for a first place finish in their
pool when facing Guatemala-2 while El Salvador-2 and Nicaragua-1
will battle for their qualification to the quarterfinals.
