Chile beats Costa Rica in straight sets

 

   

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, May 24, 2016.- Chile beat Costa Rica 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-23) in the classification round for 7-10 positions of the XI Men’s Pan American Cup being held at the Olympic Gymnasium in Mexico City.

 

Chile controlled Costa Rica with a huge advantage in blocking (10-5), they also prevailed in kills (36-34) and aces (3-2). Chile scored on 26 errors of Costa Rica, while limiting theirs to 15.

 

Chile’s had in opposite Tomas Parraguirre its best scorer with 17 points, 15 on kills and 2 blocks, followed by outside hitters Dusan Bonacic and Vicente Parraguirre with 12 tallies apiece. Outside hitter Alberto Blanco led Costa Rica with 13 points, 10 on kills, 1 block and 2 aces, middle blocker Javier Alvarez contributed with 10 points, 8 on kills and 2 blocks.

 

On Wednesday, Chile faces Colombia for seventh place and Costa Rica will battle with Honduras for ninth place.

 

Chilean captain Rafael Grimalt, said “we pressured ourselves and that made u sour own rival. As we played more comfortable, the match developed better for us. Our next opponent is Colombia and our games with them are always very close”.

 

Captain Esteban Araya of Costa Rica said “in my opinion we needed to study Chile better, we aren’t satisfied with our performance even if we have improved. Now we must focus on a Central American classic against Honduras”.

 

Argentinean Daniel Nejamkin coach of Chile said “our numbers had an enormous improvement, especially Tomas Panaguirre, and we always look for a better performance against all our opponents. We are very glad with the result”.

 

 “We improved; the team has evolved from less to more. The scores were close, mostly in the second and third sets. Our work continues” said coach Cesar Salas of Costa Rica.
