Chile dominates Costa Rica in Pool B

HAVANA, Cuba, March 17, 2015 – Chile brushed aside Costa Rica 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-6) in opening day of the III Girls’ U18 Pan American Cup. The two teams compete in Pool B which offers the only ticket available to the world championship.

The match lasted only one hour an three minutes with Josefa Marti, Karen Morales, Catalina Agurto and Magdalena Ramirez each contributing 8 points in the victory. Costa Rican Allison Font finished with seven points for the losers.

Chile’s coach Hugo Jauregui was well satisfied after the match. “We made very few mistakes and we got the result starting with the serves. It has been a good start and we remember the second cup when we also won against the Costa Ricans, of course with another team.”

Catalina Reyes, the captain of Chile, said the key was keeping the calm over the whole match. “Also we didn’t make many errors and kept the playing rhythm. I think we hurt the opponents with our serves.”

Andres Lopez, the young Costa Rican coach said despite the loss “the match was helpful for the first two sets because we played at the same level with them, the ball went over the net at least six, seven times and that was good. In the third set, the spirit of the team went down when the superiority of the rivals was evident.”

The captain Mariana Rodriguez praised the South Americans. “They are fast and they have good defense. However our team is in a new process with players who have little experience. I think we could have been better in the reception.”
