Chile to semifinals with 3-0 victory over Barbados

GATINEAU, Canada, June 26, 2015 – Chile blanked Barbados 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-20) on Friday in just over one hour to advance to the semifinals of the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau.

The South American squad dominated their opponents in attacks (35-23) and blocks (12-7). Gianluca Boreli led the winner’ attack with 14 points, five more than captain Dusan Bonacic and Gabriel Araya. The tournament’s top scorer Jabarry Goodridge led Barbados with nine points, three more than captain Ammuniki Wood and Chioke Holder.

Chile now will meet their South American rivals Brazil in the semifinals on Saturday. Barbados will take on the loser of the Mexico-USA match.

Dusan Bonacic, captain of Chile:  “We saw a team determined to do anything to win the match and show our intentions to play the semifinals and the finals. Our next match against Brazil is the best we could hoped for here. Very difficult to win. We know what it takes to beat them. We need to have our best day and they should have a low par day. I am confident our team will give it all.”

Daniel Nejamkin, coach of Chile: “We achieved our goal of advancing to the semifinals. I know we have a difficult match against Brazil, one of the best teams in the tournament.  Our serve and our block were key in the outcome of today’s match. We know Brazil very well. We have played and done camps together before. I hope that knowing each other would not mean much as they have defeated us every time we have met before.”

Ammuniki Wood, captain of Barbados: “It hurts to know that in the most important game we still haven’t shown the real volleyball that we can play. It was a real under-par performance today especially. Our passing was on today but our blocking was really off. Up until today we haven’t shown what we can really do on the court and it just hurts to know that the most important game that we were supposed to show up, we didn’t show up.”

John Stuart, head coach of Barbados: “We started the match very good, but then we lost our momentum and we started to get flat. The whole match we were playing hot and cold, sometimes playing well and sometimes playing not so good. In the third set we started pretty good but we made too many unforced errors. So now we have to look forward to the game tomorrow.”
