Chile wins bronze medal at U20 Pan Am Cup
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 24, 2015 – Chile
defeated Mexico 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) in the match
for the bronze medal at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup on
Friday.
Analia Carvajal was the offensive star for Chile with 23 points,
including three blocks and one ace, followed by the captain
Catalina Melo and Catalina Pulgar with 18 and 12 points,
respectively. Laura Sotomayor had four blocks among her 9 points
in the victory.
Maria Rodriguez and Cristina Pantoja were the best scorers for
Mexico with 19 and 16 points, respectively, while Karina Flores
and Mitzy Gonzalez finished with 8 apiece.
Chile dominated in attacks (57-44) and blocks (10-6) while
Mexico was stronger in serves (9-3).
“It was a tough game between two teams with the same level,”
Melo said. “We went out to battle every point until the final
and got the medal we wanted. This is the first medal for Chile
in a Pan American competition.”
“The outcome was not the one we expected,” Rodriguez said. “Our
game had a lot of ups and downs so congratulations to Chile.”
Hugo Jauregui, coach of Chile: “Our goal coming here was to get
an unprecedented bronze medal for Chile. We tried to avoid those
bad streaks during the match and played consistently.”
Luis Leon, coach of Mexico: “Chile played a game more
coordinated compared to the previous one between us. We didn’t
play well in the key points. It was not the team that I expected
for this match.” |
