MONTREUX, Switzerland, May 26, 2015 - A very young and smart
China beat the more experienced Dominican Republic in four sets
(25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20), during the opening game of the
thirtieth edition of the Montreux Volley Masters, at the usual
Pierrier Sports Hall.
China, represented by the under-23 team, currently holding the
title of world champions in that category, showed a clean,
sharp, and diversified volleyball that caught the queens of the
Caribbean off guard, despite their evident physical advantage.
China held advantages in blocks (9-3) and aces (5-2) while
Dominican Republic had the edge in attacks (56-55).
Liu Yanhan led China with 27 points followed by Zheng Yixin and
Song Meili with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Gina Mambru was
the best Dominican scorer with 19 points. Prisilla Rivera had 11
tallies in the loss while Yonkaira Peña and Marianne Fersola
each had 10.
In the other matches on Tuesday, Germany defeated Italy 3-1
(25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25), and Japan swept Turkey 3-0 (25-19,
26-24, 25-18).
The action continues on Wednesday with the game China v
Netherlands, followed up by the promising clashes Turkey v
Germany, and Dominican Republic v Russia. |
