Colombia edged Guatemala in opening day

CALI, Colombia, November 26, 2021. - Host Colombia edged Guatemala 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) in pool A in the opening day of the men’s volleyball tournament of the I Junior Pan American Games Cali-Valle 2021.

 

As the match developed, Colombia gained more confidence and started the competition with the right foot. Colombia held a huge advantage in all the elements of the game, attacks (42-26), blocks (12-2) and serves (6-1). Guatemala committed 15 unforced errors against 21 from Colombia.

 

Three players scored double figures for Colombia, led by outside hitter Leiner Aponza with 14 points, outside hitter Carlos Llanos who registered 13 points and opposite hitter Miguel Angel Martínez who added 12 points. Opposite hitter José Carrillo topped Guatemala with 11 points all on kills.

 

On Saturday Puerto Rico (1-0) will play Guatemala (0-1) and Colombia (1-0) faces Argentina (1-0).

Jorge Mesa, captain of Colombia: “There were too many emotions at the beginning; we hadn’t played in two years. We debut with a victory; it’s what we hoped for. We must improve our teams’ energy”.

 

Arnaldo Sevilla, head coach of Colombia: “The team was really nervous at the beginning, but they were able to perform the volleyball we wanted to see. We start with a victory, with the right foot. To beat Argentina we need a better attitude and a better disposition from everyone”. .

 

Jason Hernández, captain of Guatemala: “We were too nervous, we were hoping for a better spectacle but it’s done, tomorrow we will try to perform better against Puerto Rico”.

 

Reider Lucas, head coach of Guatemala: “We were aware it was going to be difficult, of high level. We want things to turn out better and to improve for our next matches, with better results”.
