Colombia edged Peru in five sets

CALLAO, Peru, June 19, 2015 - Colombia edged Peru in five sets 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-11) in a qualification match for the 7-10 positions of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Friday at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao.

Amanda Coneo was the main offensive weapon for the Colombian side with 25 points. Cindy Ramirez (14), Maria Martinez (13), Ivonne Montano (11) and Yeisy Soto (10) stood out for the winners.

Angela Leyva and Maguilaura Frias had 25 and 20 points, respectively, for Peru. Mirtha Uribe added 13 in the losing effort.

María Marín, captain of Colombia: “We were behind in the score but we came back to win. Peru is a strong team and the victory could have been for either of the teams. We are very glad because step by step our plans are coming through.”

Clarivett Yllescas, captain of Peru: “It is painful losing at home, especially because we were close to winning. We need to keep our heads up because there are a lot of competitions this year. We need to keep working to offer joy to the Peruvians who deserve it.”

Mauro Marasciulo, coach of Peru: “Unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities in the third set. In the tie-breaker we made mistakes and we lost the match. I don’t have any critics to my players. Our process is in its first year and we need to keep working.”

Eduardo Guillaume, coach of Colombia: “It was a tough match and at the beginning we couldn’t practice our game. From the third set on we reduced our errors and improved the block and defense relation. Our players were able to overcome a difficult situation.”
