Colombia will battle for important fifth place

 

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 12, 2018 – Colombia team kept alive their chances of qualifying to next year’s Pan American Games after beating Cuba 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) in a qualification match for the fifth position at the Women’s Pan American Cup on Thursday.

 

Colombia will meet the winner of the match between Puerto Rico and Peru.

 

Dayana Segovia had 19 points as the leader of the Colombian offense while Maria Margarita Martinez added 15.

 

Sulian Matienzo had 13 for Cuba followed by Regla Gracia with 9 ad Daymara Lescay and Diaris Perez each with 8 points.

 

Maria Marin, captain of Colombia: The key for us was the serve against a team of powerful attack. We also played with discipline and fought point by point.

 

Sulian Matienzo, captain of Cuba: The serves of Colombia hurt us. Our reception was not good and they deserved the win.

 

Antonio Rizola, coach of Colombia: We anticipated a more fragile Cuba but they showed strong serves. We were able to counterattack and the good thing is that our team is learning to play tactically.

 

Wilfredo Robinson, coach of Cuba: Their serves really hurt us. They also played well in counterattacks.
