Fifth Place at the U17 Pan American Cup

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, August 8, 2026.- Costa Rica defeated Honduras 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-17) and will play for fifth place at the Boys’ U17 Pan American Cup, being held at the Multi-Sports Dome in Guatemala City.

Costa Rica was dominant in the first two sets, imposing its rhythm against a Honduran team that committed several unforced errors that prevented it from staying close on the scoreboard.

In the third set, Honduras came out stronger and built a four-point lead. Trailing 12-8, Costa Rica adjusted its game and began closing the gap. A five-point rally allowed the Costa Ricans to turn the score around and take a 13-12 lead, an advantage they never relinquished as they went on to close out the match in straight sets.

 Costa Rica will face Puerto Rico for fifth place on Sunday at 12:00 p.m., while Honduras will play Guatemala for seventh place at 10:00 a.m.

Costa Rica outperformed Honduras 38-23 in attacks and 8-3 in blocks, while Honduras held a 3-2 advantage in aces. Honduras committed 27 unforced errors compared with only 14 by Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s Kenneth Quirós was the only player to finish the match in double figures, scoring 11 points.

 Costa Rica assistant coach Eladio Vargas highlighted the team’s improvement throughout the competition. “We feel that we have continued to improve as the tournament has progressed. We have gotten a little better with each match; today we played as well as we could, and I hope that tomorrow we can play our best match against Puerto Rico as we go after fifth place,” he said.
