Costa Rica and Nicaragua dominate Montelimar BVB Open
MONTELIMAR, Nicaragua, October 30, 2016 - Katherine
Quezada/Eugenia Ramirez of Costa Rica and Danny Lopez/Ruben Mora
of Nicaragua were the champions of the XI Montelimar Barcelo
Central American Beach Volleyball Open.
Quezada/Ramirez beat Laura Molina/Marcela Avalos of El Salvador
in a tough battle during the women’s final match of the event by
a final score of 23-21 and 21-18. In semifinals, the winners
controlled the local team of Fernanda Chamorro/Anielka Alonso by
2-0 (21-12, 21-14).
This is Quezada/Ramirez second consecutive title in
Montelimarafter last year’s victory over Lolette Rodirguez/Elia
Machado of Nicaragua.
Rodriguez/Machado lost their semifinal match 1-2 (17-21, 23-21,
11-15) to Molina/Avalos of El Salvador.
In the bronze medal match, Rodriguez/Machado defeated
Chamorro/Alonso 21-12, 21-14.
In the men’s final, Lopez/Mora played against Gerson
Contreras/Denis Lopez. The first set was very tight, where Denis
Lopez defense was controlled by his opponents, finishing 24-22.
The second set ended 21-8 as Contreras wasn’t able to continue
due to an injury.
Lopez/Mora beat Jefferson Cascante/Ramon Cubillo 21-15, 21-10 in
semifinals, while Gerson Contreras/Denis Lopez battled hard with
good defense and blocking to beat Bryan Monte/Richard Smith of
Costa Rica (20-22, 21-17, 15-9).
Monte/Smith defeated Cascante/Cubillo 21-11, 22-20 for third
place.
Teams from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and
Nicaragua competed in this year’s edition. The host country had
a total of 16 teams from San Juan del Sur, which included the
first two places in the men’s division and fourth place in the
women’s segment.
