With one day of competition left at the XI Girls’ U-18 Central
American Championship, Costa Rica downed Belize in straight sets
25-12, 25-17,25-19.
Costa Rica hold perfect record of 5-0 has only lost two sets and
will close the event on Saturday facing Honduras, who defeated
Guatemala and will battle for the Afecavol title.
Costa Rica had a strong performance and well-structured game
plan, while Belize had many imprecisions with 32 errors.
Costa Rica’s offense was distributed among different players
with a 29-20 advantage in kills and 10-3 in serves, and better
defense 28-17.
Susan Alpizar with 10 points led Costa Rica’s scorers, followed
by Tamara Espinoza with nine tallies and on the Belizean side,
Mya Musa led all scorers with 12 points.
Captain Tamara Espinoza of Costa Rica said “I am satisfied with
my team and we were well prepared, we have given our best even
in practice to win the title and we are focused even more in
tomorrow’s match”.
Juel Lewis Belizean captain said to be satisfied with her team’s
performance while facing Costa Rica, “it was a tough match, we
fought strongly and we feel happy”.
Coach Andres Lopez of Costa Rica expressed “I am already
thinking in tomorrow´s game, but first we had to face Belize. We
knew they have important players, Diego continues to be
unstoppable, she is the best blocker here and that mad things
difficult for us. I was able to use the whole group in
preparation for the final”.
Coach.Albert Humes of Belize said, “Costa Rica came out to play
and they did it well; my team is not mentally prepared, and our
performance isn’t enough to face them”.
The last day features El Salvador facing Nicaragua, followed by
Guatemala against Belize, an important match to reach the podium
and finally Costa Rica meets Honduras. The event concludes with
the awarding ceremony. |
