Costa Rica finishes with gold, Guatemala in second place
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, December 11, 2014 - Guatemala defeated
Honduras 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) to finish at second place and
give Costa Rica the gold medal at the XVIII Men’s Central
American Cup on Thursday night in Tegucigalpa.
Guatemala beat the home team in front of 1,500 spectators at the
Jorge Galeano Gymnasium, stopping Honduras’ possibilities to win
the Central American title. Guatemala and Costa Rica both
finished at 5-1 record and 24 points, but the Costa Ricans had a
better point-ratio 1.202 to 1.179.
In the closing match, Guatemala held a big advantage in all
categories: kills by 40-28 margin; 9-6 margin in blocking and
8-2 in serves.
Guatemala’s offensive line was led by captain Andy Leonardo with
23 points, while Oscar Garcia contributed with 11 points.
Honduras top scorer was Evans Torres with 18 points.
Andy Leonardo expressed: “We’re happy with the win; we defeated
the home team in straight sets as we needed too. The combination
of results and points leaves us in second place but we’re
returning home with faith in God and thankful for the support of
all our followers in Guatemala”. |
