MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 13, 2015 – Costa Rica relied on
defense and concentration to defeat Guatemala 3-1 (25-22, 23-25,
25-18, 25-20) to claim the title at the XVI Women’s U20 Central
American Championship.
Costa Rica returns to the throne occupied by Guatemala since
2011 and now has 8 gold medals overall to four by the
Guatemalans, who now have four silver medals.
Edya Espinoza was the top scorers for the new monarchs with 22
points followed by Isla Johnson and Allison Font, with 13 and 11
points. Guatemala’s captain Maria Renee García finished with 25
points, her top production in the tournament, and Sofia Gordillo
had 11.
The match was pretty even, with Guatemala dominating the attack
46-42 and 6-5 in the blocking category, but Costa Rica was
better in serves 10-3. The winners took advantage of 41 points
from opponents’ errors while committing 30.
The final ranking was as follows:
1- Costa Rica, 2- Guatemala, 3- Honduras, 4- El Salvador, 5-
Belize, 6- Nicaragua, 7- Panamá. |
