Costa Rica triumphs in their debut against the hosts

 

BELIZE CITY, Belize, July 17, 2023.-  Costa Rica’s national team started with a victory of 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-12, 25-7) against the host Belize, in the third match of the second day of competition at the AFECAVOL XIV U19 Women’s Central American Championship.

 

In the close match at the Belize City Civic Center, Costa Rica dominated in attacks, blocks and service.

 

The contested first set showed how battled the match would be, ending 25-22 for Costa Rica. In the second set, Belize proved as hosts that they came to take away Costa Rica’s title, winning 25-22.

 

In the third set, Costa Rica led once again, winning by a difference of 13 points (25-12).

 

The match extended to a fourth and final set, where Costa Rica was overwhelming winning by an 18 point advantage, 25 to 7.

 

Costa Rica prevailed 41 to 27 in attacks over Belize, 11 to 8 in blocks and 14 to 5 in serves. 31 points of Costa Rica and 25 of Belize were on opponent errors.

 

Scoring 16 points, the best scorer of Costa Rica was Joselyn Moraga and for Belize with 15, Nissan Martínez.

 

On Tuesday 18, Costa Rica will face Honduras at 5:00pm while Belize will have the day off.

Angélica Rodríguez, captain of Costa Rica: “It was a very interesting match, we managed it pretty well, it was a little complicated, however we were able to take the advantage, we played a calmer game and managed to get the result”.

 

Avianka Avila, captain of Belize: “Just now we played against Costa Rica, and we lost. I think my team worked very hard, there were some things we could have done better, we could have communicated better, we could have done passing better, but I think we worked very hard. Our goal for the next few days is to win all the other games, and hopefully get a second place medal”.
