Costa Rica with strong start over El Salvador

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, October 17 2021 - Costa Rica began the defense of the title in the XXI Central American Senior Women's Volleyball Cup, by winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-17) over El Salvador in the first game of the first day.

The Costa Ricans took advantage of the nerves and anxiety of the opponents to make a difference from the start with 8 points, in the first set, the same happened in the second set with a 7-2 advantage, although the Salvadorans tried to get closer in the closing arriving 21-16, but Costa Rica closed strong winning the second set.

In the third, El Salvador started winning 4-1, but Costa Rica turned it around with 7 points in a row (8-4) and from there they did not give up the advantage.

Costa Rica dominated the match with 29-26 in attack, 10-2 in blocking and 9-4 in service, committing only 18 errors, by 27 of their opponents.

Tatiana Sayles, with 14 points for the best scorer for Costa Rica, Tamara Espinoza contributed 9 and 8 from Karen Cope. For El Salvador, Daniela López with 7 and Captain Adriana Flores with 6 points.

Irene Fonseca, Costa Rica´s Captain: “It is always important to start winning, the team went from less to more, just like El Salvador, the level was increasing set by set and that was something important. Perhaps with more training, knowing the court more, we will gain more confidence and raise the level further ”.

"There are always nerves in the first game, a lot of anxiety, as the tournament progresses that is managed, so opening winning is something positive," said Fonseca.

Pablo Acuña Campos, Costa Rica`s Coach: “This game was especially difficult because we could not train before in this gym, but they are external factors, I really liked the cohesion of the team, we have a good group that helps each other and tries to do their best at each point. We have to work hard at the reception on this court and we will work on that in the following games, hoping to improve”.

Adriana Flores, El Salvador´s Captain: “It was a slow start, we didn´t want this, but this is a fairly young team, I like it that way because the experience will add up little by little. This result does not mean that the next matches will be the same, today it was totally adaptation, we can improve in elements such as reception and not miss so many serves ”.

Nery Petrovic, El Salvador´s Coach: “I have 10 athletes who are debuting in their first major and the lack of experience showed. I think we have come out of the most complicated game, after this the other games will be different. We are preparing this team for the Central American and Caribbean Games, of which we are host, and therefore each game we want to sum a lot of experience”.

Costa Rica will face Belize at 4:00 p.m. on the second day this Monday, while El Salvador meets Honduras at 1:00 p.m.
