Criollas Hold Off Ponce Surge and Move One
Step
Away from Semifinals
CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, March 26, 2026. – The defending national
champions, Criollas de Caguas, withstood a strong push from the
Leonas de Ponce at Roger Mendoza Vidal Coliseum to secure their
second consecutive win in Section B of the Women’s Volleyball
Superior League (LVSF) quarterfinals and move within one win of the
semifinals.
Caguas claimed the victory in five sets, 3-2 (29-27, 25-23, 16-25,
23-25, 15-11).
The
deciding fifth set was a thriller. Diana Reyes stopped Kristin Lux
with a crucial block, and immediately after, Valeria Flores
delivered an ace to give Caguas a 10-9 lead.
Ponce tied the score at 10, but from that point on, the Criollas
regained control, reaching set point first at 14-10 thanks to a
block by Alba Hernández on Jenselyn Morales. They sealed the set and
the match, 15-11, with Jenaisya Moore finishing effectively from the
outside.
Caguas’ offense was led by Jenaisya Moore with 21 points (18 kills,
2 blocks, 1 ace), followed by Génesis Collazo with 17, Alba
Hernández with 16, and Diana Reyes with 13.
For
Ponce, now 1-1 in the quarterfinal series, Sherridan Atkinson
carried the offense with 40 points. She was followed by Abby Akey
with 13, Kristin Lux with 11, and Jenselyn Morales with 10.
In
team statistics, Caguas led in blocks (12-10). Ponce held the
advantage in kills (75-65), aces (7-4), digs (104-91), receptions
(47-42), and assists (28-17).
The
next match in Section B will take place on Saturday, March 28, when
the Criollas will look to secure a direct semifinal berth as they
visit the Atenienses de Manatí at Juan Aubín Cruz Coliseum. The
Atenienses are still winless after two outings.
In
Section A, the quarterfinals continue Friday as the Cangrejeras de
Santurce (2-0) visit the Pinkin de Corozal (0-1) at the historic
Carmen Z. Figueroa court starting at 8:00 p.m. |
