Cuba and USA to be in men’s finals at Varadero

VARADERO, Cuba, May 7, 2022 – Cuba and United States will surely have a representative in the men's final of the Varadero Beach Volleyball Tournament as two strong pairs from those countries will meet each other in the semifinals early on Sunday.

 

Cuabns Jorge Luis Alayo and Noslen Díaz and Miguel Ayón and Yosvani Carrasco won their respective quarterfinal matches on Saturday.

 

Alayo/Díaz advanced by comfortably beating Mexicans Isaías Aguirre and Gabriel Cruz 2-0 (21-9, 21-15) and Ayón/Carrasco had no difficulty defeating Guatemalans Andy Blanco and Luis García 2-0 (21 -15, 21-13).

 

The other semifinal will see Americans Travis Mewhirter and Thimothy Brewster playing against compatriots Ryan Smith and Michael Boag.

 

Mewhirter/Brewster defeated Puerto Ricans Josué Rivera and Cristian Encarnación 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) while Smith/Boag beat Mexico’s Ricardo Galindo and Luis Enrique García 2-0 (21-14, 21-15).

 

All the matches towards the quarterfinal round went to three sets.

 

Aguirre/Cruz defeated the Canadians Simon Fecteau-Boutin/Hugo Rosso-Bonneau 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 15-10) in 1 hour and 13 minutes, while the Smith/Boag beat the Canadians Liam Kopp/Ivan Reka 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-12 in 56 minutes.

 

Blanco/Garcia defeated Salvadorans David and Gabriel Vargas 2-1 (18-21, 21-10, 15-11) in 51 minutes and Rivera/Encarnación defeated Dominicans Oscar Martínez/Hayerling de Jesus 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-9) in 50 minutes.

 

In the matches for positions 13-16, Ernest Broadster/Bryton Codd of Belize defeated Shawn Seabrookeees/Nage Hendrickson St Kitts & Nevis 2-0 (27-25, 21-13) and Ryck Webb/Noley Ferguson of Jamaica, Marc Lomeli/Daniel Samuelson, from the US Virgin Islands, 2-0 (21-13, 23-21).

 

Martinez/De Jesus defeated Vargas/Vargas 2-0 (21-18, 24-22) while Fecteau-Botin won against their compatriots Rosso-Bonneau by forfeit in matches for the 9-12 positions.
