Cuba and United States reach men’s semis in Santo Domingo

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 16, 2022 – The men’s teams of Cuba and United States sealed their tickets to the semifinals of the Santo Domingo Qualifier to the FIVB Beach Volleyball following their two victories on Saturday to win their respective pools.

Both winning duos needed three sets in their second outings of the day before claiming the victory.

The Cubans Noslen Díaz and Jorge Luis Alayo won their first match of the day over Mexico’s Gabriel Cruz and Isaías Aguirre 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) in Pool B and returned in the evening to outduel Puerto Rico’s Kevin Gutierrez and Juan Ribas 2-1 (23-25, 21-19, 15-6) in 55 minutes.

The men’s action in Pool A saw the American pair of Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander breezing past the father and son duo of David and Gabriel Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) and then overcame a tough Guatemala team of Andy Blanco and Luis García 2-1 (21-19, 22-24, 15-10) in 44 minutes.

Guatemala relied on the powerful services of Blanco to beat Vargas/Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-11, 21-15) while Rodríguez/Ribas defeated Cruz/Aguirre 2-0 (21-18, 21-16=.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Blanco/García will clash against Cruz/Aguirre while Rodríguez/Ribas will play against Vargas/Vargas.
