MORELIA, Mexico, October 2, 2015.- Cuba beat Mexico 3-1 (18-25,
25-15, 25-15, 25-19) to finish in fifth place at the NORCECA
Women’s Continental Championship at Bicentenario Auditorium of
Morelia, Michoacan.
Cuba quickly recovered from losing the first set with their
powerful offence, especially with enormous advantage in blocking
by 11-3 margin and 9-4 in aces to take control of Mexico who
held advantage in kills 46-38. Cuba scored on 35 Mexican errors.
Cuba’s top scorers were Outside Hitters Sulian Matienzo and
Jennifer Alvarez with 14 points apiece, and Opposite Heidy
Rodriguez with 13 points. Outside Hitter Andrea Rangel of Mexico
led all scorers with 18 points, Outside Hitter Alejandra Segura
and Opposite Dulce Carranza contributed with 12 and 13 points
respectively.
Cuban Captain Sulian Matienzo said “we weren’t motivated at the
beginning, but with better attitude and team work we came out
victorious”.
Dulce Carranza captain of Mexico indicated “my team and I need
to keep on working; I congratulate Cuba that came out to win. We
needed to serve better to not give away points”.
Cuban coach Roberto Garcia said “playing against Mexico and
their fans is not easy, they played several five-set matches
proving they are a competitive team. Our reception in the first
set was off, once it got under control we maintained the score
always close up to point 12. It’s good to have finished with a
win”.
“I want to thank the fans in Morelia, their support was amazing”
said Mexico’s coach Jorge Azair. “I am proud of my team, they
played a stupendous tournament; our setter Jazmin Hernandez
performed very well, she really has improved”. |
