TORONTO, Canada, July 21, 2015 – Cuba roared past Venezuela to
claim a straight-set 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) in a match of
Pool A at the men’s volleyball tournament of the Pan American
Games Toronto 2015 at Exhibition Center on Tuesday night.
Despite the victory, Cuba remained in third place of the pool
behind Argentina due to a lower point-ratio of 1.000 compared to
1.185 of the South Americans.
Most of the Cuban players saw action in the match that lasted 70
minutes with Livan Osoria finishing as the top scorer with 11
points. Javier Jimenez added 8 points in the victory while
Daniel Albo and Luis Tomas Sosa chipped in with 7 points apiece.
Both teams scored via 10 blocks but Cuba held the margin in
service winners 6-2 with Albo producing 4 aces. The winners led
in attacks 31-22 and made 19 errors compared to 28 by the
losers.
Rodolfo Sánchez, Coach of Cuba: “I’m happy for this result. We
knew that this match was key for us. We went out and played to
win it, to get the worth of this victory for our country. We are
done, but tomorrow we will have another big match. We gave some
rest to our players as a strategy. Colombia got closer in the
score a couple of times but we kept the advantage and closed the
match in our favor”
Eliseo Ramos, Coach of Colombia: “We had a chance to define the
last plays of the second set, but we could not solve them and
everything became more difficult. We have played at this
competition to develop this group. I began to coach them just
two months ago. We have to analyze some players for the future
of the team but I think we are on the right way. Cuba is a young
team with a lot of talented players they are in good rhythm and
we’ve got a lot of training sessions, but that is not enough
because we need more competition like our rivals.” |
