Cuba left with the U20 World Championship ticket
LIMA, Peru, May 17, 2019 - Cuba defeated Puerto Rico 3-0
(25-16, 25-19, 25-13) and won the last spot in the 19th edition
of the U20 Women's Volleyball World Championship. FIVB.
The Puerto Ricans gave a fight during the three sets, but Cuba
knew how to maintain the supremacy in attack and service to take
the victory and the pass to the grand final of the Pan American
Cup to be played on Saturday, May 18.
Ailama Cese commanded the Cuban attack reaching the maximum of
16 points, with 15 effective attacks and 1 block; she was
accompanied him in the offensive by Yaimaris García with 15
points; 9 of attack, 3 of block and 3 of service.
For Puerto Rico, its captain Sofia Victoria, was the most
outstanding contributing 12 points for her country. Cuba had a
great advantage in attack (45-21), also doubled in blocking
(7-3) and got 5 direct points in service against only 1 in
Puerto Rico.
The winning team committed 23 unforced errors, 18 losers.
Tomás Fernández, Cuban coach: We are happy to meet the goal,
the World Championship will give us that intermediate
preparation for the work we are doing in the long term. I think
the team is very good, very motivated but the product of their
young age still have many ups and downs, it is something we will
work on but we have time.
Thalia Moreno, captain of Cuba: Our objective was very clear
and we got it, we are left with the quota to the World
Championship and with the same energy we will go out tomorrow
for the gold. We have a very even team, I thank each one of my
colleagues, both regulars and substitutes, for the commitment
and effort they make.
Cuba accumulates two gold medals and one silver in their
participation in the U20 World Cup. In this new edition that
will be held from July 12 to 21 in Mexico, the Cubans will fight
to get back on the podium and improve the position reached 15 in
the last World Championship. |
