HAVANA, Cuba, June, 6, 2015 - The young Cuba team claimed a
crucial victory over Canada 3-1 (21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-23) to
keep alive their hopes of qualifying to the World Cup at the
NORCECA Women’s Final Four Champions Cup.
Unlike yesterday’s match where the local team was beaten by
Puerto Rican 3-1, the Cuban offense was better distributed today
even though once again it was topped by their 15-year-old,
player Melissa Vargas (24 followed by Sulian Matienzo (15) and
Daymara Lescay (13). On the Canadian side, only the experienced
player Tabitha Love was able to reach a double-digit tally
(13).
Roberto García, host coach, expressed he was satisfied as his
pupils fulfilled the technical-tactical planning versus
top-level team.
“They made plays which showed they are learning to win in close
matches. Anyway we congratulate our opponents who have an
excellent block and a good tactical service.”
Local captain, Sulian Matienzo, said “we entered the court very
united and aware of the meaning of a triumph to keep our
qualifying hopes alibe and we look forward to playing another
good game on Sunday against the Dominicans.”
German, Arnd Ludwing, Canadian’s coach commented that “in the
first set we played quite well. We put great pressure with the
service. However in the second set it was different. We made
many errors and even though we tried to come-from-behind, the
failures continued and that’s when we lost the match. It only
remains for us to learn from this experience and do it better
tomorrow.”
The Canadian captain, Brittney Page, expressed her
disappointment for their second loss in the tournament.
“It is really disappointing as we almost took the match to a
tie-break. On the other hand, we recognise they played quite
powerfully all over the match and we made several faults.
Nevertheless it has been a good experience to be in Havana and
learn from this tournament.” |
