LIMA, Peru, June 13, 2015 – Cuba overcame a resilient Peru to
score a straight-set 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) victory in the
second match of Pool B in front of a good crowd at Eduardo Dibos
Coliseum on Saturday.
Young Melissa Matos was the main offensive weapon for Cuba with
potent spikes and great jump services while the overall solid
blocking allowed the Cubans to establish counter-attacks
regularly
Cuba relied on its traditional power style against a Peruvian
team that battled back in the second and third sets keeping the
fans on the edge of their seats.
Peru tried to neutralize the Cuban attack with high-risk serves
but committed many mistakes in key situations with an
up-and-down game.
Sulian Matienzo, captain of Cuba, admitted her team went into
the court willing to give it all until getting the victory. “We
knew it was going to be a strong match, but everything relied on
our attitude and even with our lack of concentration we were
able to get the result.”
Roberto Garcia, coach of Cuba, commented that “both teams had up
and downs and the pressure affected the two sides; but the
blocking and defense worked in our favor. Now we had to reduce
the errors for tomorrow’s match because this is just beginning,
today we won but there is a long way to go.”
Clarivett Yllescas, captain of Peru, said about the match: “We
made a lot of errors with our serves and the spirit of the team
went down while facing the Cuban attack and their superiority in
the services. Now we have to think about tomorrow’s match to
change this result.”
Brazilian Mauro Marasciulo, coach of Peru said: “Cuba has a lot
of power with the attacks and serves and we prepared for the
strong serves but failed in the simple things. Cuba has a great
potential and now we need to prepare for tomorrow’s opponent.”
