Cuba won again and feeds the World Championship dream
LIMA, Peru, May 15, 2019 - Cuba reaped its third victory in the
V U20 Women's Pan American Cup, after defeating Peru 3-0 (28-26,
25-20, 25-19) in the last game of the Group Stage of the last
qualifying event to the FIVB World Championship.
With this result, the team led by Tomás Fernández qualified
directly to the semifinals as the first of Group B, and is
getting closer and closer to the U20 World Championship that
will be held from July 12 to 21 in Mexico.
Ailama Cese was the figure of the match with 20 points. In the
local team Kiara Montes and Ariana Arciniega stood out with 14
and 10 points respectively.
Cuba got 9 direct points in service, with 5 from Ivy Vila. In
addition, the Cubans obtained a minimum advantage in attack
(44-42) and blocking (7-6). The unforced errors were similar: 17
the winning team and 18 the loser.
Ailama Cese, Cuban top scorer: The matches against Peru are very
exciting, the public pressure took us out of focus but then we
followed the coach's instructions and found our rhythm. The
serve and attack were our main weapons, we are happy because we
achieved the goal of getting the first place in the group, and
now we will continue fighting for the World Championship.
Kiara Montes, Peru's top scorer: Cuba is a very strong opponent
and this has been a game that gives us a lot of preparation for
the World Championship. I think the team of minors did a very
good job and with the same strength and together we will face
tomorrow's rival.
Cuba closed the first stage with an accumulated of 15 points
for three victories (Guatemala, Honduras, Peru) and will play
the semifinal of the competition on Friday the 17th. For its
part, Peru will seek its pass to semis against Chile, this
