Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico and USA reach Cayman Islands men’s
semifinals
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, April 27, 2019. - Cuba, Nicaragua,
Mexico and United States reached Cayman Islands NORCECA Beach
Volleyball Tour men’s semifinals following their quarterfinal
wins on Saturday.
The first semifinal will be Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros
of Mexico facing Nicaraguan tandem of Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez;
the other semifinal is Benjamin Vaught and Spencer Sauter of USA
facing Cubans Sergio González and Luis Reyes.
Cubans Sergio González and Luis Reyes reached the semifinals
with a spectacular 2-1 (21-13, 19-21, 21-19) overtime win to
tough opponents Ivan Reka Ivan and Simon Fecteau-Boutin from
Canada.
González and Reyes had topped pool B earlier, while Reka and
Fecteau-Boutin had finished second in pool A, behind Mexicans
Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros.
Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros triumphed in quarterfinals to
strong Brian Kwasny and Gabriel Ospina of U.S. Virgin
Islands 2-0 (21-17, 21-15).
Nicaragua’s Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez moved into the semifinals
beating the other two Central American teams in the event. Mora
and Lopez took the semifinal spot over Andy Leonardo and Luis
Garcia of Guatemala 2-0 (21-10, 21-18), following their 2-0
(21-14, 21-19) win to El Salvador’s Tato and Pepe for second
place in pool C.
Benjamin Vaught and Spencer Sauter of USA finished first in pool
C. Vaught and Sauter had a quarterfinal win 2-0 (21-17,
24-22)against a resilient Dominican pair of Victor Castillo/Alex
Medina.
