Cuban men with good start at home in Varadero
VARADERO, Cuba, July 15, 2016 – Two of the three Cuban teams and
the one from Guatemala started off with a pair of victories in
day one at the Varadero Beach Volleyball Tournament, the eighth
leg of the NORCECA Circuit, on Friday.
In Pool A, the Olympic-bound team of Sergio Gonzalez and Nivaldo
Díaz (Cuba-A) scored straight-set victories over Honduras’
Manuel Serrano/Andrés Vigil (21-12, 21-11) and Dominican
Republic’s Luis Castillo/William Sanchez (21-11, 21-16).
Also in Pool A, Guatemala’s Julio Recinos/Erick Garrido got
victories against the same opponents but needing to play three
sets on each occasion. They won 17-21, 21-16, 15-13 against the
Hondurans and 21-14, 18-21, 16-14 over the Dominicans.
Liosbel Mendez and Yendris Castillo (Cuba-C) started out of the
gates with two wins in Pool C by defeating El Salvador’s Carlos
Escobar/David Vargas (21-16, 21-17) and the experienced Canada’s
team of Christian Redmann/Felipe Humana-Paredes (21-17, 21-11).
In Pool B, USA’s Spencer McLachlin and Miles Evans began their
day with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) victory off Cuba-B team of Daisel
Quesada and Karell Peña and the Canada-A duo of Michael
Plantinga and Cameron Wheelan beat Curacao’s Darwin Colina and
Norandy Bonafasia 2-0 (21-11, 21-13).
The match between USA and Canada was suspended due to a
thunderstorm and it will be played on early Saturday.
