PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, April 17, 2022 –
Cubans Leila Martinez and Lidy Echeverría
claimed the women’s title at the Punta Cana
Qualifier to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championship following a sensational battle with
Canadian twins Megan and Nicole McNamara on
Sunday.
Martinez and Echeverría prevailed in a
nail-biting duel winning by score of 2-0 (24-22,
25-23) in 49 minutes.
The two protagonists of the finals were already
qualified to the 2022 FIVB Beach Volleyball
Championships in Rome, Italy from June 7 to 19.
The bronze medal went to Juliberth Payano and
Jeneiry Rosario of Dominican Republic who
defeated Taylor Nutterfield and Melanie
Valenciano of U.S. Virgin islands 2-0 (21-12,
21-19) in 32 minutes.
In the semifinals round, the McNamaras defeated
Nutterfield/Valenciano 2-0 (21-10, 21-11) in 28
minutes and Martinez/Echeverría downed Payano/Rosario
2- (21-14, 21-14) in 33 minutes.
The quarterfinals took place earlier on Sunday
with both matches lasting 29 minutes.
Payano/Rosario defeated Angjeny Tolentino and
Delys Meulens 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) while
Nutterfield/Valenciana beat La Tisha Joseph and
Apphia Glasgow of Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 (21-14,
21-10). |
