Curacao survives Guadeloupe women fightback for fifth spot
RIVIERE-SALEE, Martinique, December 12, 2019 - Team captain
Githangely St Hillaire led all scorers with 17 points as
Curacao held off a fightback from Guadeloupe for a 3-2
(25-20, 27-25, 15-25, 16-25, 16-14) in their fifth spot
playoff at the 2019 Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA)
Junior (Under-20) Women Championship.
St Hillaire’s tally included 12 kills and five service aces
while Liz Rossen added nine and Gloveienelly Phelipa, seven
in the one hour, and 58 minutes clash at the La Ville de
Riviere-Salee Palais Des Sport.
Guadeloupe, who may feel hard done by some questionable
calls by the officials in the final stages of the match, got
15 points from Teha Meslier De Roca, while Fanie Lewis got
13, and Julie Gustave Dit Durflo and Tengy Balzamont, 11
points each.
Overall, it was an evenly contested match with both teams
guilty of committing a high volume of errors, Guadeloupe 55
to Curacao’s 48.
Despite the loss, Guadeloupe managed to outscore the winners
35-28 on spikes, and 18-8 on service aces, while both teams
had eight blocks each.
In the main draw semifinals on Thursday night, host
Martinique, champions in 2013 faces three-time runners-up
Barbados from 6 pm, while six-time winners Trinidad and
Tobago tackle Curacao in the first semifinal from 2 pm,
ahead of the bronze medal match and finals on Friday.
