Curacao’s Tolentino, Savonije reach historic women semis
OCHO RIOS, Jamaica, November 16, 2019 - Curacao’s Angjeny
Tolentino and Leandra Savonije became only the second
Caribbean women’s team to ever reach the semifinal stage of
a NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tournament on the penultimate day
of the tenth and final stop of the 2019 NORCECA Beach
Volleyball Tour.
In the quarterfinals, Tolentino and Savonje overcame Costa
Ricans Angel Williams and Camila Villegas 2-0 (21-19, 21-17)
to join the Trinidad and Tobago duo of Nancy Joseph and Elki
Phillip, who accomplished the feat in 2011 in Dominican
Republic.
However, Curacao will have a tough task on their hands as
they meet Cubans, Yanisleidis Sanchez and Lidiannis
Echeverria for a place in the gold medal match after the
latter beat United States Virgin Islands-A’s Melanie
Velanciana and Taylor Nutterfield 2-0 (21-11, 21-15) in
their quarterfinal.
The other semifinal will feature favourites, USA-A’s Falyn
Fonoimoana and Corinne Quiggle, who won the last leg and
outplayed Canada-A’s Devon May and Darby Dunn 2-0 (21-19,
21-11) in their final-eight encounter versus Nicaraguans
Valeria Mendoza and Lolette Rodriguez, 2-0 (21-16, 21-19)
victors over Guatemalans Estefanie Bethancourt and Natalia
Giron.
