Defending Champs Dominica fall to St. Lucia in ECVA U21
Men Beach Opening Day
BASSETERRE, Saint Kitts and Nevis, June 6, 2025.- Dominica’s Mervin
Mingo and Bill Frederick lost to Victor Rio and Peter Emmanuel of
St. Lucia in a hard-fought 2-1 battle (17-21, 21-19, 15-12) in Pool
A on opening day of the Men’s 2025 ECVA U21 Beach Volleyball
Championship in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Victor Rio and Peter Emmanuel of St. Lucia, along with Jedediah
Puncheon/Vikash Sundar and Alex Lall/Joash Walters of St. Kitts and
Nevis, and Grenada’s Zerick Walcott and Kibose Hamilton advanced to
quarterfinals after winning their respective pools.
Pool A was claimed by Victor Rio and Peter Emmanuel of St. Lucia,
who rallied to defeat Dominica’s Mervin Mingo and Bill Frederick.
Both teams advanced to the pool-deciding match by defeating
Anguilla’s Trevon Smith and Shaquoy Reid in straight sets. Mingo and
Frederick won their matchup 2-0 (21-8, 21-14), while Rio and
Emmanuel dominated with a 2-0 victory (21-7, 21-13).
Host country duos Jedediah Puncheon/Vikash Sundar and Alex
Lall/Joash Walters emerged as winners of Pools B and C,
respectively.
Jedediah Puncheon and Vikash Sundar clinched first place in Pool B
with a straight-sets victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines’
Dishawn Alexander and Stephen Woods, 2-0 (21-12, 25-23). Earlier in
the day, both pairs had secured wins against St. Eustatius’ D'jario
Hassell and Zjondre De Jesus. Puncheon and Sundar triumphed 2-0
(21-8, 21-12), while Alexander and Woods also posted a 2-0 result
(21-4, 21-10).
Alex Lall and Joash Walters faced a tougher road to claim the top
spot in Pool C. They opened their campaign with a hard-fought
three-set win (21-18, 16-21, 15-10) over the British Virgin Islands
duo of Maduro Dunkley and Alexander Wheatley. In the decisive match,
Lall and Walters battled fiercely to secure a straight-sets victory
(21-19, 22-20) against Antigua and Barbuda’s Khaliq Joseph and
Miguel Lugo, who had previously swept Wheatley and Dunkley 2-0
(21-12, 21-16).
Grenada’s Zerick Walcott and Kibose Hamilton opened Pool D play with
a commanding 2-0 win (21-8, 21-13) over Bermuda’s Kyle Mello and
Anijahe Dos Santo Martin. The home team, Julian Bristol and Komarr
Fraties, also swept Bermuda in straight sets (21-8, 21-16). In a
thrilling pool-deciding showdown, Walcott and Hamilton edged out
Bristol and Fraties 2-0 (24-22, 23-21) to claim the top spot in Pool
D.
Saturday starts with the round of 12, the winner will face group
winners in the quarterfinal round.
