PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 23, 2015 - Dominica came out
piping hot in the East Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA)
Junior Male Championship when they defeated Anguilla in straight
set (25 -15, 25-16, and 25 - 23) in the opening game of the
tournament.
The Dominicans made light work of their opponents in the first
two sets but had to starve off a resurgent Anguilla in the third
set.
Coach Ray Robinson of Dominica made his intentions clear at the
end of the game. “We came here to win the tournament and I am
just glad that were able to win our first game in such a
fashion,” he admitted.
His opposite number Justus Connor had commendations for the
victors.
“I must congratulate Dominica for controlling game and
eventually winning but I thought that we made too many mental
errors and this was shown in our play. However I cannot be too
hard on my charges since most of them are rookies but I trust
that they would learn from the experience and put up a better
performance in our next game,” he said.
The scoresheet revealed that Dominica totally outscored Anguilla
in spikes 32 to 14 whereas the blocks (6-5) and service points
(2-2) were about even.
Dominica’s team captain Tamir Lawrence playing in the middle
blocker position led all scorers with 11 points 10 of which came
from spiking. He got good support from Faywani Foye also a
middle blocker and Outside Hitter Camron Lawrence who both
contributed 7 points.
For the losing team Aldus Frank was the top scorer with 8 points
derived from 6 spikes and 2 blocks.
