Dominica secures 3rd place with straight sets win over Grenada
POINTE-A - PITRE, Guadeloupe, June 16th, 2013 - Dominica
confirmed the 3rd place position of the World Championship
Qualifier - Group N when they defeated Grenada for the second
time in the tournament this time in straight sets - 25-14, 25-21
and 25-19.
The Dominicans varied their attack with almost everyone chipping
in to score points. Kenworth Bedminister was the leader with 7
spikes and Lincoln Riviere helped him with five spikes in his
overall 6 points. David Toussaint and Kerwin George joined
forces to add 10 points to the victorious cause.
Grenada too looked everywhere to gain points. In the end, three
players (Akim Andrews, Jonell Phillip and Dominic Pierre)
tallied 6 each but their efforts were not enough as they ended
the tournament winless.
Coach Brathwaite of was not dejected at all with his winless
performance. "Our learning curve certainly improved from this
outing. We looked at the two top teams in particular and saw how
they used their setters, how they run offensive plays and their
quickness. These are all notes for us to use when we return
home," he chimed.
Coach Guiste of Dominica was somewhat satisfied but still not
happy. "Coming here we really wanted to qualify in order to meet
our main rivals (St. Lucia) again but that was not to be.
However we would rather take the bronze that nothing at all," he
concluded.
His captain in Ray Robinson supported the claims. I am not
really happy with bronze but I am glad that we were able to
learn particularly from the Central American team. They function
a lot different from us and it would be very interesting to
implement some of what we saw here especially to our young and
upcoming players.
Both teams were eliminated at this stage of the competition. |
