Dominica secures top spot in Pool A with straight sets win over
St. Kitts/Nevis
Oranjestad, St. Eustatius, July 12, 2014 - Dominica earned top
spot in Pool A when they overpowered St. Kitts/ Nevis in
straight sets (25-13; 25-17; and 25-20) in the second match of
Day 3 of the ECVA Senior Female competition.
St. Kitts/Nevis best effort came in game three but by then
Dominica had already picked up an unstoppable momentum. It was
too little too late for the Kittitians.
We started out too slowly but having said that I thought our
defense played a tremendous game but out attack was nonexistent
for the most part. Then by the time we started to apply the
pressure they Dominica was already in a groove" reported
Steadroy Collins coach of the St. Kitts/Nevis team.
Captain Antionette Henry agreed with her coach. "It seems as if
everything went wrong. They are a much taller team and so we
started tipping and controlling but that did not work. I think
we lost focus and concentration at crucial points as well" she
admitted.
The St. Kitts/Nevis girls found points difficult to garner as
Brenda Allen led the team with 8 while Shanicia Dyer and
Antoinette Henry contributed 5 each.
Dominica held the advantage in every scoring department - 29 to
20 in spikes, 7 to 2 in blocks and 6 to 2 in service aces.
Coach Albert Loblack was pleased with his team's efforts. "Kudos
to the St. Kitts/Nevis team who defended much better than we
anticipated. However credit must also go to our girls who stuck
to the game plan and executed very well to win in straight sets.
It appeared to me that we were a little fitter than they were
and this worked to our advantage" he recounted.
Dominica team Captain Anna Maria Xavier seemed to have enjoyed
the victory very much. "It is always exciting to be in a good
attacking mode it sets us up to meet the challenge of the next
game which may be even tougher" she said.
Xavier led from in front with 12 points compiled via 12 spikes,
2 blocks and 2 aces but she also made reference to the other
hitters like Marcia Gustave- Renault with 10 and Zahidu Henry
with 8.
St. Kitts /Nevis as Pool A runner up will now have to play
against St. Lucia - Pool B winner while Dominica pool A winner
is expected to clash with Antigua (Pool A runner up) in the
other semi finals. |
