Dominica silences St. Eustatius
Oranjestad, St. Eustatius, July 10, 2014 - Dominica drowned out
the noise of a boisterous home crowd and beat St. Eustatius in
straight sets 25-19, 25 -13, and 25- 21 in the curtains game of
the opening day of the ECVA Senior Women Championship.
The Earl Merkman Sports hall had about 250 persons, most
supporting the home team but they soon became quiet after they
realized that Dominica had taken charge of the encounter.
Dominica enjoyed a 9 point advantage in terms of kills (28 to
19) and edged the home team in the blocking department 8-5. They
also got additional points courtesy of 36 errors committed by
the hosts as opposed to 27 of their own.
Coach of the losing team Elvin Henriquez was very dissatisfied.
"I am not happy at all. We made far too many errors and this is
the area we have to improve if we want to win and attain our
objective of moving on to the medal round. Anyway we are still
optimistic" he asserted.
"We were really energized by the crowd urging us on, but I have
to agree with our coach that our poor communication led to some
very simple errors. We have to improve that and be more
consistent reported" captain Amarikinia Robins of St. Eustatius.
Albert Loblack; head coach of Dominica insisted that the
victory was merely a result of hard work. "It was our
preparation, our consistency and composure that gave us victory
tonight. Although we lost concentration at some points we used
our bench to combat against that" he said.
Dominica's captain - Anna Maria Xavier led from in front with
ten points but had good support from Zahidu Henry with 9 and 7
points each from Marcia Renault - Gustave and Lisa James.
St. Eustatius scorers were led by Ashanty Principaal with 10
points. St. Eustatius next test is against St. Kitts/Nevis on
day 2 while Dominica will look for their second win against
Dutch St. Maarten. |
