SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 19, 2015 – Hosts
Dominican Republic rolled past Nicaragua in straight sets (25-3,
25-7, 25-5) in the third and last match on opening day of the
U20 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Ricardo Arias
Pavilion on Sunday.
The strong services of the Dominicans proved to be too strong
for the Nicaraguans as the winners held a 20-0 margin in aces,
led by a record-tying eleven shots from Natalia Martinez, who
led all the scorers in the match with 16 points.
Martinez equaled the record of most aces in a single match
established by Puerto Rican Daly Santana against Costa Rica in
2013. Gaila Gonzalez had 14 points in the winning cause followed
by 8 from Jineiry Martinez.
“I didn’t know about the record but I am very happy,” Martinez
said. “I went back to the jump serve last November in a U23
competition and I feel comfortable now.”
Yocaty Perez, the captain of Dominican Republic, said: “Our
serves were the key for the victory and we also had a steady
game during the match.”
“We did our best effort against a strong and brave Dominican
team and I am satisfied because we stayed together and did our
best,” Nicaraguan captain Eugenia Sequeira said.
Wagner Pacheco, coach of Dominican Republic: “We took this first
match out of our way as the girls shook off the pressure of
playing in front of their parents and local fans. The serves by
Natalia were very important today.”
Claudia Noguera, coach of Nicaragua: “It was a very strong first
match against a team technically better and also stronger. Their
potent serves were fundamental and I hope this is a learning
experience for our team.” |
