Dominican Republic earns the right to defend the title

LIMA, Peru, June 20, 2015 - Dominican Republic will face United States in the gold medal match of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup following their semifinal 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21) victory over Argentina at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum of Lima on Saturday night.

The Dominicans held the advantage in blocks 13-8 with Marianne Fersola leading the way with four and took the win despite giving away 35 points via unforced errors.

Yonkaira Peña topped the scorers of the winning team with 19 points, followed by Gina Mambru and Marianne Fersola with 16 markers apiece. Brayelin Martinez chipped in with 10 in the winning effort. Yamila Nizetich was the best for Argentina with 10 points while Lucia Fresco and Florencia Busquets each finished with 10 in the loss.

Prisilla Rivera, captain of Dominican Republic: “We knew the game was going to be a long one but luckily due to the experience we were able to get the win. We are very glad of being in the final but I think we could have played a better game.”

Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic: “We knew it was not going to be easy because Argentina is a fighting team but we made too many mistakes probably due to anxiety and trying to win quick anticipating tomorrow’s match. Despite of that I am glad, not by the way we played but because of the win and to know we will play for the title tomorrow.”

Yamila Nizetich, captain of Argentina: “We couldn’t control their attack and that was the key. We served well but they also did well with the ball separated could rotate and rotated well. I think we were bad in the rotation. I am sad for the loss but tomorrow there is chance to finish third.”

Guillermo Orduna, coach of Argentina: “We won a set against a team that is fifth in the world. The team did what it was supposed to, played technically well. We did the job we planned. In case of a fifth set maybe the result would have been a different one.”
