Dominican Republic beat Barbados for a second win
HAVANA, Cuba, May 22, 2014 – Dominican Republic collected its
second victory in the NORCECA Men’s World Championship
Qualification Tournament Pool P by defeating Barbados in
straight sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-21) on the second day of actions
at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum in Havana on Thursday.
Germán Recio and José Miguel Cáceres with 13 and 10 points,
respectively, were the top scorers for the winners despite
playing only two sets for the match.
Veteran Shawn Simpson was the only player of Barbados who
attained double figures in scoring with 12 tallies.
“We sent everyone into the court today as a way to prepare the
team for the match against Cuba on Friday,” Dominican Republic’s
coach José Alvarez Cutiño said.
Wilfrido Hernandez, the captain of Dominican Republic, said
everyone in the team contributed to the win as they anticipate
the match against Cuba.
“We all did our part today but we are hungry for more even
though, because of their tradition, all Cuban teams must be
respected,” Hernandez said.
“I expected better from my team, which failed to adapt to the
rhythm of the Dominicans, it felt as if we were going to get
them by the third set but we couldn’t”, Barbados’ Coach Ludger
Niles stated.
Barbados’s captain Alain London admitted his team’s performance
was poor today.
“We played poorly, maybe we started very excited something we
are not used to,” London said. “Only by the third set we worked
better as a team.” |
