Dominican Republic fifth place at Junior Pan Am Games

CALI, Colombia, December 4, 2021.- Dominican Republic finished fifth place in the women’s volleyball tournament at the I Junior Pan American Games Cali-Valle 2021 defeating Mexico in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) at Evangelista Mora Coliseum.

Dominicans won the NORCECA clash to finish with a 2-2 record and Mexico with 1-3 for sixth place.

Dominican Republic outblocked Mexico with a huge 10-3 advantage and a slim 45-44 margin in attacks, while committing fewer errors (12-18); both teams scored 2 points from serves.

Outside hitter Madeline Guillen of Dominican Republic scored a match-high of 21 points, including 20 kills; outside hitters Flormarie Heredia and Samaret Caraballo contributed with 11 points each. Opposite hitter Marian Ovalle led Mexico with 15 points, joined by middle blockers Chrisitan Alvarez and Renata López who added 10 points each.

NORCECA confirmed that both teams qualified to Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, Dominican Republic as champion of the Pan American Cup Final Six and Mexico via the Junior Pan American Games.

Wagner Pacheco, head coach of Dominican Republic: “My general opinión of the event is that today we played calmly, yesterday we had a good match, it wasn’t what we expected because we wanted a medal; we accept the results because we know we had a really bad performance against Peru and we paid the price”.

Luis León, head coach of Mexico: “This wasn’t what we were aiming for. Yesterday our captain Gracias had a small injury and we didn’t want to risk her today. Generally speaking I leave with a good feeling about my teams’ performance; we know we must work, mostly in key points in the end which made a difference in the matches we lost in five sets to advance”.
