Dominican Republic loses to VNL reigning champion Italy in five-set thriller

HONG KONG, China, June 15, 2023.- Dominican Republic lost a five-set thriller 2-3 (16-25, 25-16, 25-21, 22-25, 10-15) to VNL reigning champion Italy on Thursday in Hong Kong.

Dominican Brayelin Martinez continues to be a dominant force leading her team with 18 points (14 kills, three blocks, one ace), accompanied by sibling Jineiry with 16 points (12 kills, three blocks, one ace).

Three more Dominicans scored double-digits, Yonkaira Peña (15pts), Gaila Gonzalez (14pts) and Sthefany Gonzalez (12pt).

Dominicans were better in blocks (16-13) and aces (3-1) while Italy led 60-56 in kills and committed fewer errors (23-28).

Dominican Republic stands with a 2-4 record and will face NORCECA rival Canada (3-3) on June 17 at 13:30 local time in Hong Kong.
